RACV Torquay Resort Redevelopment

Project Value $118M

At the gateway to the Great Ocean Road, the RACV Torquay Resort was the RACV’s first 5-star resort facility. The brief required the design to be simultaneously contemporary but comfortable, to satisfy existing members’ expectations and to open the market to corporate groups, international tourists and private events.

Sited to take in the easterly view of Torquay and Jan Juc beaches and overlook the existing golf course, the building provides a venue of prominence, which sympathetically integrates with the landscape. As a 20,000m2 build, its form is dominated by a sweeping five-level arc that houses 92 5-star hotel rooms located above counter-curving lower levels of public facilities, including restaurant, conference rooms, indoor pool, gym, day spa and members lounge. The extensive use of weathered timber and rammed earth was informed by the coastal condition and deliberately selected to weather and fade to render the structure into the landscape.

Detailed project planning involved complex staging for construction of the new building, relocation of operations and demolition of the existing clubhouse during the construction phase. The entire golf course was remodeled and new headworks infrastructure with an intersection formed part of the site wide redevelopment.

The project was successfully delivered on time and under budget.
